A barefoot newsie sells papers in Los Angeles, May 1915

A barefoot newsie sells papers in Los Angeles, May 1915I find this photo quite poignant: A newsie sells papers on the streets of Los Angeles in May 1915. (UPDATE: He appears to be standing in front of the Barrel house, a saloon at 120 W 2nd Street in downtown L.A.) It’s bad enough that a little boy his age is out on the streets selling newspapers, but the fact he’s doing it barefooted is heartbreaking. I’d love to know where he was standing. The store behind him sells Pabst on tap and Tungsten cigars for 5 cents.

  1. The newsie in the photograph appears to be standing in front of the Barrel house, a saloon at 120 W 2nd Street owned by F J Schmitz and Co, according to 1914 LA City Directory.
