Southern California Edison Community Chest display window, 3rd Street, downtown Los Angeles, 1930In the windows of the Southern California Edison Company offices on 3rd Street in downtown LA, they had an advertisement for the Los Angeles Community Chest. The sign implores Angelenos to “Be generous – let’s fill it this time” which takes on a poignancy when you realize this is 1930 and the country was starting to deal with the effects of the Depression. (The Community Chest organization is still around but is now known as United Way.)
