It’s not hard to find a photo of the May Company department store on Wilshire Blvd but this is a rare one showing the store under construction in 1939. Little would those construction workers know that what they were building was become the long-awaited Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences museum. (Side note: We can see the sign on the Wilshire/Fairfax corner of one of LA”s legendary drive-in restaurants, Simon’s Sandwiches.)
