The massive The L.J. Rose residence stood at Fourth and Grand in what is now downtown Los Angeles. Bunker Hill was filled with these grand homes. John Rose was as very successful vintner and built his mansion in 1888. This post card is from 1890 and what I find interesting about it is the inclusion of the words “in winter.” It almost reads like they’re saying “This is what winter in California looks like, so you East Coasters can suffer all you like!”
