These are the La Brea Tar Pits on Wilshire Boulevard as seen from the air, circa 1924. This stretch of Wilshire is now known as the Miracle Mile so it’s hard to imagine the land cratered with bubbling pits of tar (“la brea” is Spanish for “the tar”) but in this aerial photo, you can see some of them—as well as the oil derricks scattered across the land now taken up with the Park La Brea housing development.
