Xanadu backdrop in “Citizen Kane” (1941)

Xanadu backdrop in "Citizen Kane" (1941)As you may have gathered from the title of my third novel, Citizen Hollywood, I’m a big fan of “Citizen Kane” (1941) – not just the movie itself, but the drama surrounding the production. I’ve always wondered about the real size of that iconic image of Kane’s Xanadu (read: Hearst’s San Simeon). In my imagination, it was actually a lot smaller than this shot reveals. We can see the crew member bent over near the bottom left, which means the whole backdrop must have been 12 to 15 feet tall. And now I’m wondering what happened to it.
