Loyola Theater marquee and facade, Sepulveda Boulevard, Los Angeles, 1972

Loyola Theater marquee and facade, Sepulveda Boulevard, Los Angeles, 1972I normally post photos of Los Angeles and Hollywood taken during the golden era (1927 to 1959, the same years that the Garden of Allah Hotel was open) but occasionally I find a photo that’s too gorgeous not to share. This is the Loyola Theater at 8610 S. Sepulveda Boulevard in 1972, when “The Candidate” was playing. It opened on October 3, 1946 by Fox West Coast Theatres so this is how it probably looked for most of that time. Pretty striking, huh?

The building is still there. Check out the rainbow terrazzo along the sidewalk!

Thank you for the Loyola photo – it’s wonderful!
Do you happen to have photos of the Fox Inglewood? Particularly looking for a nighttime shot. It was built in 1949 by Fox West Coast on the site of the 1925 Granada.
I am president of Inglewood Historic Preservation Alliance and we are the ones who got our Fox on the National Register. We have worked for 9 years to save the theatre and it will be saved, though the use for it is still up in the air. I’d be grateful for any photos you could turn up.

  2. Thanks, Anne. I don’t have any shots of the Fox Inglewood — but I’ll be in the look out for them now!
