Here we’re seeing the opening night of Los Angeles’s first drive-in theater, the Pacific Drive-in at 10850 W. Pico Boulevard, just south of Century City on September 9, 1934. We’re so used to drive-ins being part of our urban landscape that it’s interesting to consider what a grand novelty this new way of seeing movies was. The Pacific lasted until 1947. The Westwood Pavilion now stands on the site.
Drivers line up to be the first drive-in theater-goers:
This drive-in was moved to Olympic and Bundy in 1945, where it became the Olympic Drive-In until it was demolished to make way for the Martin Cadillac dealership.
Dear Martin: I am at my daughter (Diana’s) house in San Mateo now. My home is still standing as of now. Son Mark brought me to his place on Tuesday (I think) and he and wife are flying out to N. Carolina today, so Diana picked me up yesterday & am here in San Mateo now. I always said I had the best of all possible families and they keep proving it. How are you and Bob? Love you always, Louella.
