December 16, 1911 was a big day in the life of people who lived in the San Fernando Valley: it was the first time a Red Car traveled from Los Angeles to North Hollywood. The line opened up convenient access to and from the Valley, which back then was largely farms and fields but would soon be developed into vast housing tracts. Fun fact: on the far right is Fred Weddington, who negotiated to get the line into the Valley. There is now a fairly long street stretching from North Hollywood to Van Nuys named after him.
Veddy spiffy! And a hundred years later, the Valley WISHES they still had the Big Red Cars…
