Union 76 gas station, 1160 Westwood Boulevard, Westwood, Los Angeles, 1933

Union 76 gas station at night, Los Angeles, 1933These days, all gas stations tend to look like each other. They’re a functional necessary evil in the modern world, but it wasn’t always like that, which this photo proves. This Union 76 gas station was at 1160 Westwood Blvd at the corner of Lindbrook Drive in Westwood. The photo was taken in 1933 (probably when the gas station opened) when architects weren’t averse to building a huge decorative tower, add some pretty ornamental details and stick a 10-foot electric sign on top. Oh, and then light the whole thing like it’s a movie set.

And the same gas station by day:

Martin: just got home after staying with my kids during the Thomas Fire event; home is still here and in one piece, but it sure scared the shit out of me. Happy holidays to you my dear friend – and to Bob. When does your new book become available on Audible? Love you always, Lou & Marlon (the cat).
