Looking north on Broadway from 7th Street, downtown Los Angeles, 1924Photos taken during the 20s and 30s always show downtown Los Angeles teeming with life: automobiles, streetcars, pedestrians in hats and coats and collars. In this photo, we’re looking north on Broadway from 7th Street, downtown Los Angeles in 1924 and I’d love to be able to hear the sounds and sense the smells. Across 7th Street we can see a banner advertising summer concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, which was only a couple of years old at the time. They’re advertising concerts conducted by Alfred Hertz, the German conductor who ran the San Francisco Symphony and led them in their first recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company.
