I love these casual across-the-hood-of-the car-while-driving shots. It gives us a palpable sense of what it was like to drive east along Wilshire Blvd back in the day. We are looking east toward downtown from about Highland; the tower in the distance is the Wilshire United Methodist Church. Can anyone identify the cars in this photo so that we can get a more accurate date?
The geography of the street does not match an eastward view toward Beverly Hills. Besides, the Beverly Hills City Hall is just off Santa Monica, not Wilshire. Cheers!
`1935 Ford Sedan on the far right heading towards the camera. And David Ginsberg is right. The description on the email does not match the description here. If, in fact this is Santa Monica eastbound the building on the right would be the Beverly HIlls City Hall. If this is eastbound on Wilshire that building on the right could be the Methodist Church or maybe the I. Magnin with it’s art deco tower?
I think you’re right about the ’35 Dodge vs. ’37 Pontiac. The bumper guards are the right height and there appears to be turn signals in the proper place for a ’35 Dodge. Good call, your eyes are a heckuva lot better than mine!
Martin,
Look closer: The campanile tower in the distance on the right is the Wilshire United Methodist Church (still extant) at 4350 Wilshire. See: https://www.laconservancy.org/locations/wilshire-united-methodist-church
Therefore, this view was taken heading east from about Rimpau.

The cars headed towards the camera appear to be a ’37 Pontiac (L) and ’35 Cadillac (R)

I’ll go along with ’35 Caddy at right, but I think that’s a ’35 Dodge at left. 😀
