It’s hard to believe that the northwest corner of Wilshire Blvd and Fairfax Ave was ever an airfield, let alone one that belonged to a movie director. Cecil B. DeMille was an airplane enthusiast who started his own airline, the Mercury Aviation Company in 1918. His first airfield was where Fairfax High School now stands and he opened this one. Meanwhile, across the street, Charlie Chaplin’s older half-brother, Sydney opened the Chaplin Airfield in direct competition. This shot of DeMille Field No. 2 with the Goodyear blimp was taken in 1920.
