Currie’s Ice Cream Parlor at 6775 Sunset Blvd, circa mid 1930s

Currie's Ice Cream Parlor at 6775 Sunset Blvd, circa mid 1930sAlong with CC Brown’s on Hollywood Boulevard, one of the things I wished I’d be able to experience in the Los Angeles of yesteryear was a visit to a Currie’s Ice Cream Parlor. (Does anyone know when they closed down?) There were a number of them all over the city, but this one was at 6775 Sunset Boulevard, which put it just east of Highland Ave. From the circa 1936 Lincoln Zephyr beneath the words “Ice Cream,” we can place this photo in the mid-1930s. That Mile High Cone sign on the roof must have really stood out.

David says: The Curries chain consisted of several franchisees, so they closed at separate times by about 1960 or a bit after. There was one on Riverside Drive near Clybourn close to my childhood home in Toluca Lake that was extant at least until late 1959. The Currie’s building and cone sign at 1521 West Whittier Blvd. in Montebello (demolished, now a Walgreen’s) survived until fairly recently. For more data, see:

Here’s one from inside. I wonder what Grape Pineapple flavor tasted like? (Bummer about the price increase.) This isn’t dated but I was born in 1958 and ice cream cones when I was a kid were 10 cents.

    • I like grape flavor and I like pineapple flavor, but together? Yikes! Sounds mighty sweet to me!

p.s., Martin…it tasted super, tart-sweet with a good balance, and a heavenly pale purple with scattered bits of real pineapple gleaming thruout. Read my ‘war story’ about my personal military connection with this flavor!

There were a couple of Currie’s in Glendale and one in Atwater, at Fletcher and Riverside.

I can remember my parents taking us to the Curries in Long Beach just off the Circle in the mid to late 50’s. The peppermint ice cream was my favorite.

    “Sodas and malts,
    Double thick
    Hurry to Currie’s
    Double quick.”

    Weird the things you remember.

I’ve seen references that Currie’s was the actual location of Lana Turners discovery , not sure how true though
