Built in 1893, this magnificent building was the La Grande Station for the Santa Fe Railway. It stood at the corner of 2nd street and Santa Fe Ave, just a few blocks south of the present-day Union Station, whose construction sewed its seeds of redundancy when it opened in 1939. The building itself came down in 1946, but was lucky to have lasted as long as that as it sustained significant damage during the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
Train passengers arriving at the La Grande station on the Santa Fe Railway line, circa 1924:
The Santa Fe station was used as a location in the Laurel and Hardy film “Berth Marks” [beginning at about 0:46]. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrkBVxuBBrE
In Frenchman In Jaques Tati’s 1953 masterpiece “Mr. Hulot’s Holiday,” there is a scene of passengers waiting on a platform for a train. They are also forced to listen to station announcements that are totally unintelligible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE3QROGW3Ew
L & H influenced many other comedians, including Tati.
