Burbank Airport in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, 1931Burbank Airport in the San Fernando Valley isn’t a huge facility, but I have never there when it hasn’t been bustling with passengers and traffic. So it came as a shock to see this photo taken in 1931, a year after it opened, so clean and clear, and with such beautiful lines—who knew the terminal was originally Spanish revival? Nothing of that remains anymore.

The airport has had a succession of names over the years:

  • United Airport (1930–1934)
  • Union Air Terminal (1934–1940)
  • Lockheed Air Terminal (1940–1967)
  • Hollywood-Burbank Airport (1967–1978)
  • Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (1978–2003)
  • Bob Hope Airport (2003-2016)
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (2016-present)

    They can call it what they want but it’ll always be the Bob Hope airport to me.
