In these days of environmental impact studies and ecological awareness, it would seen strange to go for a Sunday drive (in that fabulous red convertible Packard!) and park your car overlooking a jungle of oil wells. But if you lived near the Signal Hill area of Long Beach in 1941 when this photo was taken, I suppose you just took it all (including, I assume, the oily smell) for granted.
Growing up in Southern California, I remember seeing these wooden oil dericks so well. They were something I always looked art in wonder. They seemed to vanish so slowly that you did not notice until they were all gone, replaced by the oil pumps that looked like giant dinosaurs.

Richard – was there a smell to them? Oily? Metallic? Industrial?
The car appears to be a ’41 Packard 120
Ah, so it’s a ’41 Parkard, is it? No wonder it’s so striking.
