In this photo, we’re looking east on Wilshire Boulevard at Alexandria in 1939. On the right hand side we have Coulters department store and Silverwoods, which was a high quality men’s clothing store. On the left we can see the Wilshire Bowl at 5665 Wilshire, which was a number of things over the years. From the early 1930s to 1942 it was the Wilshire Bowl made popular by bandleader Phil Harris. Then it was The Louisiana for a year and in 1943 it became Slapsy Maxie’s until 1950, when it became a Van de Kamp’s Wilshire Blvd coffee shop.
