ooking east on Wilshire Boulevard at Masselin Ave, Los Angeles, 1939In this photo, we’re looking east on Wilshire Boulevard at Alexandria in 1939. On the right hand side we have Coulters department store and Silverwoods, which was a high quality men’s clothing store. On the left we can see the Wilshire Bowl at 5665 Wilshire, which was a number of things over the years. From the early 1930s to 1942 it was the Wilshire Bowl made popular by bandleader Phil Harris. Then it was The Louisiana for a year and in 1943 it became Slapsy Maxie’s until 1950, when it became a Van de Kamp’s Wilshire Blvd coffee shop.
