In this photo, we can see what Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles looked like in the 1880s. At the time, it was called Sixth Street Park, then St. Vincent Park, then Central Park. It became Pershing Square after the end of World War I, when the city renamed it after General John Pershing, the commander of U.S. forces in the war. But back in the 1880s, there is nothing recognizable about the park in this photo. For that matter, there’s nothing recognizable about the Los Angeles that surrounds it in this photo. Ah, what a difference 130 years will make…!
