This spectacular night view of Hollywood Boulevard was taken from the Highland Ave corner sometime during the 1930s—or at least pre 1945 when Hotel Christie (whose sign we can see on the right) became the Drake Hotel. It looks like the biggest searchlights are shining near the Hollywood and Vine corner, so I’m wondering if there’s a big premiere or Academy awards ceremony going on at the Pantages Theatre.
When I was a boy, I would often go along with my parents to the movies on a Saturday night. We usually went to Hollywood, as my Mom & Dad loved first run films. I was always impressed with the lights at night on Hollywood Blvd. They seemed brighter, somehow, than other cities and I guess they really were. The one evening that I will never forget was in 1949. Coming out of the Hollywood Theatet after the show, I was walking a little in ahead of my Parents and when I steped into the bright lights of the blvd, was amazed to see that it was snowing. I was in shock. Snow? It almost seemed that the snow flakes were fake and being produced by some special effects guy for a movie. They were huge. but, No, it was real snow. Now, I was thrilled and also amazed that, of all places I could have been when this rare snowfall in Los Angeles occured, I was standing on hollywood Blvd. The memory of that evening is seared in my mind to this day. Thanks, Martin, for this photo. It reminded me of that special evening so many years ago.

Wow, Richard, thank YOU for sharing that memory with us. I’ve seen photos of that rare snowy day in LA but you lived it!
