As much of fan as I am of vintage sepia shots, there’s something about color photographs like this to really bring to an era to life. We’re looking at the corner of Sunset Blvd and Vine St in Hollywood. I’d say this was taken in the very late 1940s because the NBC studios as the KNBH television sign out front. KNBH commenced broadcasting on January 16, 1949. The first live show was a local variety program called “On With The Show” hosted by Peggy Lee. For an account of that night with wonderful pics, see the Eyes of A Generation blog: http://bit.ly/2thRBNh
This photo broght back so many memories. I was living down near the LA River at this time. My Father managed The Saddle & Serloin Club off Los Feliz blvd (a riding academy & member club for Hollywood big wigs), so I spent a lot of time in hollywood, just a few minutes away. I remember Music City, there on the corner, as a great place to listen to and buy records. LPs, nor 45s were available yet, as I remember, but 78s were the thing then. I love that there are two Studibakers in this shot. However I seem to remember that this model, the Bullet Nose design, was not introduced until 1950. That would still coinside with your discription of the time. The NBC Building, of course, is pure old Hollywood. Makes me a little homesick for those days. Thanks for this photo. Haven’t seen it before.
Hi Richard, You’d know more about those Studebakers than I would so I’ve changed this post to “circa early 1950s.” And I will admit being rather envious that you’re able to be a little homesick for those days! Also, in case you haven’t seen it, I have a page on which I’ve collected all sorts of photos of the Sunset & Vine corner: http://bit.ly/nbc-sunset-vine
