There are plenty of photos of the May Company department store at the corner of Wilshire Blvd and Fairfax Ave, and it’s little wonder that it has become an iconic example of LA architecture. But when you see a straight-on photo like in this 1948 shot, it’s easier to see how simple the lines of the building were and how that wraparound vertical sign really made it stand out. The building is currently undergoing a complete overhaul and is due to open as the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in late 2019.
