A small pond at La Brea tar pits near what is now Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, 1910The young girl to the left is standing at a small pond in what we now know as the La Brea Tar Pits near Wilshire Blvd and Fairfax Ave. This was taken in 1910, when the only development was the Hancock oil field behind her (and that strange triangular thing that I can’t identify.) When I see photos like this, I often wonder what those people would say if they saw what view would look like 100 years’ time.

I think the triangular thing is a barn that’s sitting in a depressed area that’s lower than where the people are. The area with the lighter criss-cross trim is probably the opening to the hay loft.

    • I did seem like a roof to me but it looked like it was sitting on the ground. But you’re right, PDQ, now that I look at it again, it looks like a small barn standing on a lower piece of ground. Well spotted!

I’m guessing it’s a covering for archaeologists who were already working on the Tar Pits.
