Looking out from the Owl Drug Store at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, 1940.Almost always, we get to see Hollywood and Vine from the outside, but this 1940 photo shows us what it was like to be standing inside the Owl Drug Store looking across Hollywood Blvd to the California Bank branch in the Equitable building, which still stands on the northeast corner.

Also from 1940, here is an aerial view of pedestrians and Owl Drug on the corner of Hollywood and Vine:

I wonder what newspaper the young, cigar-smoking sunglassed hipster is carrying in the photo.
Oh, and don’t tell me: do we have a time-traveler on the left talking on his cellphone?!

In the 70′ s 80’s it was Lee Drugs…I worked there as a delivery man in my early 20’s ! I passed up an opportunity to work as a carpenters apprentice at Paramount Studios, the old set, not far from there ! Went to college at LACC and played baseball under renown coach PHIL POTE 1981…later at Loyola Marymount in Westchester , the north side of LAX …..Great times then ! Fond memories of good people.
