I can only imagine the celebratory energy that must have filled the streets of Los Angeles (and everywhere else, too) when the news arrived that the Japanese had surrendered, thus bringing about the end of World War II. This photo was taken that night – August 14, 1945 – at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. It must have been cuh-cuh-cuh-razy to have been a part of that moment. Down near the bottom of the picture we can see someone holding a copy of the LA Times with the single banner headline: PEACE!
It was probably what we call today “a staged event”, with an announcer and sound system, and the photo set -up by a professional to record the historic event. May have even been staged by a local radio station.
Any idea why everyone is facing the camera?

They must have done something because nobody would have heard any announcements over the ruckus of that crowd!
I imagine a fair number of young men got “lucky” that night.
Ha! Yes, I imagine they did. But to be fair, so did an equal number of women!
