The opening (or closing?) ceremony of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games

The opening (or closing?) ceremony of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic GamesWhen it came time for Los Angeles to host the 1932 Olympic Games, the world was struggling through the Great Depression. It resulted in a low participation of only around 1,300 athletes representing 37 countries, which is a shame because it was also the first to build an Olympic Village, which was located in Baldwin Hills. Still, it true showbiz fashion, the show must go on. Here we have a rather spectacular photo of the opening ceremony (or it could be the closing ceremony—I could clarify which) at the Los Angeles Coliseum that looks to me rather like the Electrical Light Parade at Disneyland.

I can only just imagine what it must have been like to be in the audience that night.
Thanks for your postings that allow me to dream of another time that I would sell my soul to be back in time to experience.

The Opening Ceremony was all in daylight and so was (at least most of) the Closing Ceremony. I’ve seen other photos of the stadium and this “electrical parade” as it’s referred to. I’ve read about and seen footage of the 1932 Olympics and don’t believe this was a part of it and, as spectacular as that photo is, it would definitely be attributed to the Olympics if it had been!
