It took some digging to find what this streetcar was all about. The signage at the front says “Tilton’s Trolley Trip – from Sea to Orange Groves.” It turns out that it was a sightseeing trip (and/or real estate prospecting trip) taken over the Pacific Electric streetcar network and billed itself as “One Hundred Miles For One Hundred Cents.” That seems like a pretty good deal to me. And in 1909, when this photo was taken, there would have been zero traffic to hold up the schedule.
Here is the Tilton’s Trolley Trip streetcar outside the Castle Green Hotel, Pasadena in 1909:
Love to see photos of the Green Hotel/now the Castle Green. I lived there – sixth floor, last window on the left on the flat roofed section (that was the hotel) – when I was a student at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1967-1968. Oh yes, and that part of the hotel that faces Green Street – which is now a senior residence – was an early location of Throop University which later became California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech).
At first I thought it was the Hollywood Hotel but then I realized that the hills were facing the wrong direction. I love that an atmospheric building like that is still around!
