The front of George Schwab Shoes store at 1055 Westwood Blvd in Westwood shows us that to make effective signage all you need is well-placed lighting and a slick font. Oh, and the layer of glass bricks adds a nice touch, too. (This is photo is from 1938.)
George Schwab was my grandfather. An INCREDIBLE man. I remember going to his store and feeling so proud of him. He owned this magical store, and he looked so handsome, so professional… The classiest, most regal, kind man I have ever known. My favorite childhood memories are of him. He lived to be 89 years old. I’m almost 60, and I still can’t believe he’s gone.
George Schwab was my grandfather. The greatest man I have ever known. I remember going to the store and being so proud of him! He was so respected, kind, regal, professional… and he was proud of his business. He lived to be 89 years. I’m now 60 and still can’t believe he is gone. He had the most positive impact on my life and we were lucky that we had him. (If I reminisce too much, I may cry… but I remember the store so vividly. He told me that he sold shoes and “handbags” to Lucille Ball, Barbra Streisand, Mitzi Gaynor, and other big stars I was too young to be familiar with then).
Oh wow, Dana! George was your grandfather? I’m so glad you have such precious memories of what sounds like a very special man. Thanks for sharing your memories of him with us.
Just a shot of a storefront, but also a whole other world, and one palpably so.
May have to search this out and frame it.
It’s pretty gorgeous, isn’t it? And yes, very frameable.
Impressive design. 40 years ahead.

Thanks for your kind reply. I hope everyone has a Grandpa, or someone truly amazing, to look up to —- and be loved by… Cheers.
