Chapman’s Fancy Ice Creams, Los Angeles, circa early 1930s

Chapman's Fancy Ice Creams, Los Angeles, circa early 1930sIf you’re going to open an ice cream store in Los Angeles, of course you’re going to build it in the shape of an iceberg with a chimney on top. Especially if you’re going to label your product “fancy” because nothing quite screams “fancy” than a Californian iceberg. I found a listing for “Chapman’s Ice Creams” in the Westwood Hills City Directory for 1933-1934 at 951 Westwood Blvd, which would put in right in the heart of Westwood Village but it doesn’t say “Fancy” so I can’t be sure that it’s our iceberg.

951 Westwood Blvd is the corner of Westwood and Weyburn. The building on that corner is one of the original Westwood buildings constructed by Janss Corp. It’s a 7 Eleven now, but for many years it was a drug store. The directory listing mentions Janss, Drugs. I think Chapman’s Ice Cream was sold there, but the iceberg was somewhere else.

Anyone know when the Chapman’s on Westwood and Weyburn closed? My great aunt possibly remembers it being open in the 50’s

There is a scene near the end of an Adam-12 episode “Vendetta” first broadcast 11/22/1972 that shows the rean entrance of a Chapman’s Ice Cream. The sign is clearly visible.
