Looking east along Hollywood Blvd from the Bonnie Brier Hotel at the Highland Ave corner, 1936

Looking east along Hollywood Blvd from the Bonnie Brier Hotel at the Highland Ave corner, 1936This photo was presumably taken by hanging out of the window of the Bonnie Brier hotel, which stood on the southwest corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Ave. I’ve never noticed the Bonnie Brier in any other photos—probably because most photographers were focusing on the more famous and photogenic Hollywood Hotel directly across the street. A half a block in the distance we can see that Frank Capra’s “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” is playing at the Hollywood Theatre (now a venue for the Guinness Book of World Records.) That movie came out in April 1936 so I’m placing this photo in the early summer of that year. I especially love that sporty two-seater automobile with the boxy trunk that’s approaching Highland—as well, of course, as that semaphore traffic signal.

  1. I’ve been trying to convince The Grove to add a semaphore signal at what might be Ogden, between them and the Farmer’s Market, where their streetcar crosses.
No luck. It would be a nice improvement to appearance and safety.

What a great picture of the Hollywood dreamscape of bygone years. Besides the two-seater with the attached trunk, I noticed the tall gent in the white pants on the right, the two tall guys standing on the curb behind the two-seater, AND the woman getting out of her car behind the two-seater. Such an action-packed photo. The only thing missing is me permanently transported in time to be there. 🙁

Me as well Rich, I would love to be driving that car with the trunk on the back stopped at the light.

Sanborn maps (LOC) from 1907 and later show original corner building was always the Bonnie Brier Hotel with dining facilities and drug store on ground level. A restaurant was added to the Hollywood Boulevard side near the hotel front entrance. A similar second building appear west by 1930 with a small structure in between. Presumably, the Park Hotel was a successor of the old venue..maybe just using the added room spacing after the older structure had been reduced or replaced (no evidence yet).
