When Sanderson Hosiery built their factory at 11711 Olympic Blvd, they installed something more eye catching than a regular sign: a 30-foot leg covered in one of their fine products—or at least painted to look like that. I assume the lettering around the base spelled out “NYLON.” It’s a shame that The Big Leg is no longer around—these days it would be considered highly selfie-instagram-worthy.
One report I read said, “When they opened in 1948, they raised actress Marie Wilson up to it via crane.” Here are some photos:
I have 2 images Marie being hoisted if you’d like them?
Yes please, Stephen!
I believe this is after the hoisting and gartering (is gartering a word?)…the crane is visible on the right.

Thanks, Johnny. Yes, gartering is a word … now.
When did the”leg”disappear (“RUN”off)? Was it destroyed?
That’s a good question. Most likely it was dumped in the trash when the time came but I’d love for it to surface one day and installed somewhere public.
The LEG was 30′ high. It would most likely have been “decinstructed” for diaposal…unless someone or someone “Hollywood” entity took it.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. ???
Plenty of people probably wanted it, but where the heck do you put a 30 foot leg???
