For as long as I’ve lived in Los Angeles, the Angels Flight funicular railway on Hill Street in downtown Los Angeles has been sitting out there on its own. So it’s odd to see it hemmed in like this with office towers on one side and the Third Street Tunnel on the other. These days, you also have the option of walking down the stairs that parallel the track but I don’t see any here. Nor would I want to take then if I was hauling bagsful of shopping from the Central Market across the street. I’m also impressed with that 5-bulb “Winslow” electrolier street light at Angels Flight base station.
This photo shows the stairs running parallel to Angels Flight:

What a great photo! I was living on Bunker Hill in 1950 and took Angels Flight all the time. I tell people it was a great thrill ride for a kid because it looks like the cars are going to hit head-on only to lurch past one another at the last moment missing by just inches. The pass occurred at the depth of the cutout for the tunnel, so it looked like you were going to be launched out over the precipice. You had all that adventure for a nickel. I could go on and write a book about Angels Flight. I am glad we still have it, but it is not the same after they relocated it down half a block south. By the way, there were stairs next to it, which do not show in the picture.

Thanks for sharing your memories, Gordon. If you did write a book about Angels Flights, I’d buy it!
There were stairs on the other side of the tunnel in this picture.

Thanks, Johnny. Come to think if it, there would need to be stairs in case of an emergency.
Here’s a view that shows the stairway next to Angels Flight.

That’s one sharply suited police officer there. And is that Bogey to the left of the electrolier?
Rich – let’s run with the Bogie theory until proven otherwise!
