Soon after the Carthay Circle Theatre opened in 1926, it quickly became one of the theaters favored most by studios when it came time hold their premieres. The theatre’s soaring tower and stark white exteriors lit up beautifully amid all those searchlights raking the night skies. This artfully framed shot, taken through the arches of a nearby building (does anybody remember what that building was?) makes it almost look like it could have been somewhere in Europe.
I went to see “Sound of Music” or “My Fair Lady” or possibly both there in the 60’s. The whole Carthay Circle Center was such a beautiful place. I am sorry we lost it. As to the nearby building, here is a link to the Carthay Circle Wikipedia page. It appears to have been an office building which had a Security First National Bank branch.
What a shame that this beautiful thgeater was torn down because of the shortsided attiude of people back then. I remember going there twice, onced when I was 7, when my Grandfaher took me to see”Bambi”. I remember it was there because of the striking beauty of the building and another time I went with my Family to se “Around The World in 80 Days”. ust have been torn down not long after that. Sad!

I envy you Richard that you got to see it at all!
