A 1961 Dodge Los Angeles police car parked out front the Griffith Observatory

A 1961 Dodge Los Angeles police car parked out front the Griffith ObservatoryI’m not sure why a 1961 Dodge Los Angeles police car is parked out front the Griffith Observatory and then cleared of all people. But it looked like the sort of crispy sunny day where the view from Mt Hollywood would have been pretty good. Or maybe not. If this was taken in 1961, the attempts to clear up the air would still have been ongoing.

Linda says: “The statue of Isaac Newton (behind the car) was done by sculptor George Stanley, who from Cedric Gibbons’ drawing, made the Oscar Statuette.

Maybe Sgt. Joe Friday popped inside for a private showing!

I’m thinking there was either a TV show or film being shot up there that was set in the early 1960’s and the police car was part of the shoot.

I say that because of the license plate on the car. I can’t make it out clearly because the image is too low-res, but it appears this car has either no front license plate or it has the plate with black background/gold letters. Those plates didn’t start until 1963. The plates in use from 1956 till 1962 had a yellow background with black letters. So this 1961 police car appears to have the wrong license plate – if it has a plate at all.

Our friend Leslie would be proud of me, don’t you think?

California Highway Patrol 1961 Dodge Polara. Observatory—>>Polara?? The license plate is visibly yellow-on-black, but perhaps something like the style of E-plate in use at that time…IIRC, Diamond-E was one version of government employee plates. Maybe the state had another design. It seems Jay Leno owns one of these behemoths.
