These days, Malibu is a long stretch of expensive beach houses lining the shore, but back in the 1950s, when this photo was taken, it wasn’t much more than a bunch of scattered buildings. Trancas Restaurant, which we can see on the left, was at 30763 Pacific Coast Highway. A shopping mall stands there now but PCH is still a great place for a Sunday drive, and right now during the Covid-19 lockdown, probably has as much traffic right now as it did when this photo was taken.
Saw Many top artists there. I lived on a dirt path from the Bar, walked there so as not to drive drunk. Wednesday nights, Jam Night. You never knew who would be there. I saw Eddie Van Halen, Bonnie Rait, and many other great artists there. So sad when they closed it down. Malibu was never the same after that.
That was a nice venue. We saw Randy Hansen there. The first time we saw him years earlier he filled up the Greek Theater and the B-52s opened for him. Then a few years later at a packed house at the Rialto on Wilshire. At Trancas he was alone with drum machine and living in the back of an old van and took bottles of beer offered him and tilted his head back and drank them like a water cooler while playing leads. It made me sad. Then 20 years later he was playing at a little park in Orange County and we saw him. I talked to his manager and Randy sang our song “ One Rainy Wish” and I reproposed to my wife of 35 years at the time. We were invited backstage and just hung out for a while with his entourage. That was 10 years ago.
Saw foghat there in the 90s wondering if it was still happening
Are they still booking entertainment?
Not sure why it was closed but the place needs a live venue just like the Malibu Inn has at the Malibu Pier.
