The world globe being hoisted into place at Crossroads of the World at 6671 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, 1936Here’s a bit of Los Angeles history in the making. In 1936, America’s first outdoor shopping mall, Crossroads of the World, opened at 6671 Sunset Boulevard. To ensure people knew where it was, a soaring white tower stood at the front. On top of that tower sat a spinning globe of the earth. This photo shows that globe being hoisted into place. From the size of the man in the lower right corner, we can get an idea of how big it was. In 1980, Crossroads was added to the National Registry of Historic Places so it’s still around.

Referring to a period when I was a young ensign studenr at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. I would come down every weekend when I could afford to snoop around old Hollywood.
    I wrote:
“Believe it or not, folks (and Martin too), I’ve never made it there.

Wonder how many people today “make it there?”

Can’t imagine driving down Hollywood Boulevard like I did years ago to see a little ol’ but very fiesty lady in a two door Ford roadster weaving from lane to lane, blowing her horn repeatedly, waving one arm as if to say, “Get out of my way!”

She must have been from an old family who lived in the area when it truly was “Hollywoodland.” From a quieter and more peaceful era.

Mind you, her red car was vintage in 1955-1956.”

“…make it there.” To explain: I was referring to “the Crossroads of the World.”
