When the Schwab brothers – Leon, Bernard, Martin, and Jack – opened their newest location at 8024 Sunset Blvd, I can’t imagine they had any idea it would become one of the iconic locations during studio-era Hollywood. But it did, and ever since it opened in 1932, it fed the dreams and stomachs of Hollywood hopefuls and those who made it. I’ve often wondered what they served at Schwab’s and yesterday I came across a menu from the 1940s. I think I’ll start with a Mexican Tamale with chili, then move onto the Club Style Sandwich No. 3, and end with coffee and a Black Beauty for dessert. And what’ll you have?
The front of the menu also lists their location at 401 Bedford Drive, Beverly Hills. For a larger version of the menu, click HERE.
I have–long ago. It’s not bad and has a grainy taste, sort of like Japanese genmai tea. It was advertised as the caffeine-free alternative to coffee for evenings. I remember a “Mr Coffee Nerves” from radio and newspaper ads; Postum was the suggested antidote to being sleepless or crabby. This was a long time ago–the 40s, like the Schwab’s menu; I was born in 1942, just after my mother and father graduated from Hollywood High, so I love your expertise and the reliving of the old days.
A No.2 for me and a Schwab’s Zombie to wash it down with, because why wouldn’t you?
I absolutely would…if only to learn what a Schwab’s Zombie was!
$1.85 ?? You must be loaded! 45¢ for the grilled cheese and a cup of Postum is all I can do at these prices.
I’d be very happy with a grilled cheese sandwich, Skip! I googled Postum to see if they still make it…and they do. I’ve never tasted it. Have you?

Thanks, Skip! I’m glad you’re enjoying my various vintage musings. And yeah…Postum doesn’t sound like anything I’m in a hurry to try…
No1 club also if I’m particularly peckish the deluxe avocado salad.
A zombie or a grape cobbler!!
Of course on an expense account.
Sounds good, Sharon. Especially the expense account! And I’m really hoping someone can tell me what was in a Schwab’s zombie!
I was doing okay until I got to cream cheese and jelly. But the salads sound good, even if they are among the most expensive things on the menu!
Go on, Pamela – splurge with one of those salads!
The bacon and avocado sandwich and a banana split is my choice.
Sounds good to me, Cheryl. I’ll save you a seat at the counter!
