Fair Oaks Avenue and Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, New Year’s Day, 1950

Fair Oaks Avenue and Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, New Year's Day, 1950By the masses of paper strewn across the intersection of Fair Oaks Ave and Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, on New Year’s Day in 1950, I say that some big-time partying went on the previous night. I don’t know that time this photo was taken, but there are a lot of people around—probably for the Tournament of Roses Parade that happens every New Year’s Day. I’m guessing those two streetcars marked “Special” have something to do with the parade, which goes down Colorado Blvd.

Both buildings in the photo are still around. This image is from March 2019:

  1. Al Donnelly says:

Shadow lines suggest noon, so parade is done. Big twelves are being let through onto Colorado off of Fair Oaks, where they had temporarily layed over after bringing morning crowds. They will run back to to Los Angeles via Lake in this case, with others likely having departed back the other way. They might space blocked trains of two or more cars to depart with time delays between to prevent traffic jams on the streets.
