Usherettes of Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre, 6708 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, circa 1920sOn October 18, 1922, Sid Grauman opened his Egyptian Theater at 6708 Hollywood Blvd with the premiere of Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks. As he would five years later with his Chinese Theatre, Sid went all out with the theme. (Egypt was hot that year with the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb.) This is a hand-colored photo of the Egyptian Theatre’s usherettes decked out in—well, it’s hard to know what they’re dressed as. Harem girls? Slaves? Cairo housewives? And that display behind them—you have to wonder if it means anything or is it just a bunch of pretty hieroglyphics?

Hollywood was always fascinated with Egypt. When King Farouk came to Los Angeles in the fifties my mother couldn’t stop talking about him. Actually the dress of these usherettes was pretty accurate of countryside girls or those from poor areas of major cities like Cairo & Alexandria. I love watching old Egyptian movies to see what life was like in the 40’s & 50’s.I live in Alexandria but most of what was so fascinating is gone.
