Looking north up Vine Street from south of Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, 1955

Looking north up Vine Street from south of Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, 1955Driving up Vine Street just after dusk in 1955 offered Hollywoodites a streetscape of bright neon lights. Standing south of Sunset you could see the lights for NBC Studios, The Broadway Hollywood department store, Plaza Hotel, ABC Studios, and Wallichs Music City advertising their “Self Service Records.” On the block south of Sunset, we can see a billboard for “Panorama Pacific” which was a magazine style program on KNXT Channel 2 from 1952 to 1964.

  1. Tom Chelsey says:

Love it. I worked at the Broadway building many years ago, an office building then, also leased by AT & T. We had a couple of floors there. We used to joke that our floor was probably the women’s or shoe department! Howard Hughes, according to legend, had an office on the top floor in the 1930s and we were told (many times) the place was haunted. The elevator would go up to the top floor for no reason at all. Spooky! Today its all condos. The old NBC studios is now a bank, so the angle of that pix is closer to Sunset Boulevard. The Broadway is right on Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. No matter, the aura of Hollywood and Vine does not change. And never should change. Thanks for the memories.
