The photographer of this 1920 photo was standing on Santa Monica Beach looking north. In the far distance we can see the Santa Monica pier. On the right are a couple of the large beach clubs that were popular back then. The closest one is the five-story Casa Del Mar Beach Club. Most interesting of all is that vehicle on the left. It is an electric tram that took people for a ride along the walkway.
Hi Martin,
My parents were members of the Del Mar Club, as they called it, in the ’40s and early ’50s. I can remember the place from when I was 3 or 4, circa 1957 or ’58.
It went through some very rough times, including being the HQ of Synanon under that kook who put a bag or box of rattle snakes in someone’s mailbox, Charles something (Diederick?).
My daughters are in from Chicago and PA, and this very day 1-2-21, we went down to walk along the Venice “Boardwalk” and passed by the Del Mar’s east and south facing sides.
The Del Mar was restored a number of years ago and lives on in glory today, though I don’t know if it’s a membership club again.
Parking in the public lots immediately to the south is much easier these days with a great many people heeding the governor’s diktats to stay home. Obviously, we’re scoff-laws. But you knew that about me.
Just an entrancing photo. I can’t even imagine how relaxed and beautiful and pristine LA was back then.
Yes! A *completely* different way of life.
