In the late 1800s, the most prominent mansion in Los Angeles belonged to Margaret Crocker. It sat at the corner of 3rd and Olive streets. This photo was taken from the veranda looking down 3rd. The building on the left with the tower is the old City Hall on Broadway between 2nd and 3rd. The building on the right is the Bradbury at 3rd and Broadway which, somewhat miraculously, survives to this day. It’s probably the only thing in this photo that does.

What is the large building in the far distance to the east?
I noticed that building too but have no idea what it is.
Martin, that large building, at the northeast corner of Spring and Third Streets, is the Stimson Block, the first six-story building in Los Angeles. Somewhat after this image, across the street at the southeast corner, the Lankershim Building would be the first at seven stories.
Thanks Gene!
One more thing survives: The tower of St. Vibiana’s cathedral is visible behind the right of the edge of the City Hall. It is located on Main Street near 2nd Street.
You’re right, Gordon! Well spotted!
The imposing building on the horizon is or was the Los Angeles Orhphan’s Asylum located in Boyle Heights. It opened in 1891 and was torn down in 1957. Here is information about it: https://boyleheightshistoryblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/los-angeles-orphans-asylum.html
Ah! THANK YOU Gordon!
