In this photo we’re treated to a wide shot of three places along Hollywood Blvd east of Highland Ave: Henry Dine mens wear, Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre, and the Pig ‘N Whistle restaurant. The theater and restaurant are still around, as is that three-tower building. At the time it was the Hotel Christie and is now a Church of Scientology building. Two Universal pictures, “Ladies Courageous” starring Loretta Young, and a filler called ‘Her Primitive Man” are playing at the Egyptian, which dates this photo to 1944.
Roughly that same view in April 2019:
I used to love to go to Pig ‘n Whistle on Sunset on a Friday night and enjoy a Bass ale and fish and chips. It was mostly a blend of young people, students, industry wannabes, tourists, and the outdoor patio or the inside seemed like a step back into 1930s Hollywood. I miss those days, just don’t miss the crowding, high taxes, and the political drift.
I sure to miss restaurants, and crowds, too, in a funny way. I guess what I miss is being a part of something other than my laptop and living room.
