Looking north up Flower Street toward the Richfield Oil Building lit up at night, downtown Los Angeles, circa 1950sIn this atmospheric shot, we’re looking north up Flower Street in downtown Los Angeles with the uniquely striking Richfield Oil Building lit up at night in all its glory. It really must have been a sight to see – day or night – and I’d love to have seen it for myself before it was razed in 1969. I don’t know when this photo was taken but I’m guessing circa 1950s – but if anyone reading this can correct me, I’d love to hear from you.

Of all the vanished buildings in Los Angeles history, this one would rank near the top, if not at the top, for me to see, if given the chance. Wonderful photo.

I lived on Bunker Hill in the 1940’s and 50’s. The Richfield Building was a beautiful sight viewed from the heights of Bunker Hill especially at night when the tower was lighted up. It was a never to be forgotten sight. The Richfield Building and City Hall dominated the skyline and defined LA for me. I thought the Richfield building would be there forever and couldn’t believe it would be torn down. They took a part of LA’s identity when they did.
