Most views I’ve come across which take in the high-rise buildings around Hollywood and Vine—Taft building, Broadway department store, Hotel Knickerbocker—are usually seen from the south looking up Vine Street. In this shot, we’re treated to an unusual view looking down from the top of the Vine St hill from the construction site of the 101 Hollywood Freeway that plowed through the area in the early 1950s.
Remarkably that building closest to the camera is still there. Back in the day it was known as the Hollywood Plantation Hotel at 1831 N. Vine. It’s now the closest building to the freeway off-ramp. This image is from January 2018.
In the 50’s the building was known as the Hollywood Plantation Hotel. The 2 stories and columns on the front do kind of give the plantation house look.

These days it’s temporary housing for long-term offenders before they re-offend.

Thanks Johnny. I did think those columns looked a bit out of place but now it all makes sense thanks to your sleuthing!
I’m always up for sleuthing. This photo of the place looks even more plantation-like to me.

If you go north on Ivar Avenue, you can walk up a hill to where the avenue dead-ends. At night, it feels like you’re in the midst of the 1920s. If you continue walking after the pavement ends, as you reach the crest of the hill you can suddenly see the Hollywood Freeway. It’s a striking, even startling, segue from one historical era to another.
