We don’t often see the Hollywood Bowl from this angle. My guess is that the photographer was standing on the hillside where the 32-foot cross stands and was facing southeast. It’s interesting to see the Bowl from the rear with all that space out the back for the performers. Past it we can see the parking lot where the buses are parked during a performance, and past it the houses (I wonder if the residents can hear the music?) Farther back, those high-rise buildings are clustered around the Hollywood and Vine intersection; the Capitol Records building is particularly clear. And, of course, beyond that, Los Angeles sprawls out as far as the horizon.
Here’s a postcard showing the nighttime version of that view.
There is something wrong with this photo. First it was taken west of the 101 FW and the Cross on the mountain is east of the freeway.
I don’t remember the green terrace area. The photo may be a composite. What year was the photo taken?
Hi Grant, I was only guessing about the location of the photographer. This could easily be composite because I suspect this is a postcard.
The picture was taken from the stretch of Mulholland west of the 101 Freeway that overlooks the Bowl (and where there is a named, formal viewpoint today). The green areas are still green today, but just planted with trees and some picnic tables along the pathway to upper-tier seats snaking its way up the hill.
I agree with Grant, who I spent a lot of time with as a kid hiking through those hills and sneaking into the Bowl. The cross was and still is east of the freeway, this is on the west. Good history, though.
