In this photo, we can see three cars parked outside the sales office of the Hollywoodland housing development. The soon-to-be-world-famous Hollywoodland sign was illuminated for the first time on Saturday, December 8, 1923, so this photo probably was taken in 1924. Behind the cute sales office, we can see one completed home, with two more in the background. But that’s about it! It’s always surprised me that the idea was rather slow to catch on. Surely the views must have been a big selling point?
Roughly the same view in February 2021:
I imagine it took some selling to get people to live up in the hills where you had to chug uphill in a 10hp Model T. And then what about utilities? When were they all in? Wouldn’t want to build first then wait.
Good point, William!
I’m shocked that adorable little house is still there! I love that style so much!
Me too!
Outside of the general story of the birth of the early movie industry in Hollywood, the Hollywoodland real estate boom is my next favorite. To be somebody involved in this real estate development with these “early adopters” and of all their backstories would be SO fascinating.
I’ve always wondered about the famous sign. Did they have to get approval from City Council? Or some City department? Or did they just throw caution to the wind and put it up?
That’s a good question, Bill. Seeing as how it was the early 20s, I’m guessing it was a case of “anything goes.”
