When the Sunset Tower opened in 1931 at 8358 Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood, the apartment building was considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Los Angeles area. This photo was taken in 1939, when parking on the Sunset Strip was an achievable ambition. The building is still around today, but only after it was saved from likely demolition and turned into a hotel in the 1980s.
The building hasn’t changed much – only the palm trees are taller. This image is from April 2019.
This is my favorite building in Los Angeles, and maybe the world! I LOVE it. I’ve been lucky enough to stay here, dine here many times, go to the spa, etc. I was just there in June when I was in town. It’s a fantastic building and so glad it was saved!!!
That’s an amazing photo of it!
Is that sign across the street for the Chateau Marmont? Rent signs? Was it a residence prior to becoming a hotel as well?
The Marmont is a number of blocks east of the Sunset Tower, so I doubt it. Also, it was an apartment block when it opened, but it opened just before the stock market crash so they pivoted to a hotel fairly quickly.
This site covers various buildings up and down the Strip. Across the street from the Sunset Tower was an always changing bunch of businesses.

In the television show Cannon, which ran on CBS from 1971 to 1976 and starred William Conrad. The title character lived in the penthouse. In real life, John Wayne once lived in the penthouse, where he was known to have kept a pet cow. Seriously.
A pet cow? AT the hotel???
This building serves as Lucifer’s home and nightclub in “Lucifer”. It is, however, heavily CGIed but it’s clearly the same building.
