I would love to have been in the aircraft (or Goodyear blimp?) the day in June 1956 that this photograph was taken of the Sunset Strip section of Sunset Blvd. The Strip has changed significantly since then, of course, but I see a few familiar buildings. The apartment building near the bottom left (8439 Sunset Blvd) is now called Piazza del Sol but back then was the Hacienda Arms Apartments. The white tower in the center was then known as the Argyle Hotel, which is now the Sunset Tower Hotel (8358 Sunset Blvd). And above that, on the other side of the Strip, we can see the Chateau Marmont (8221 Sunset Blvd) which was a hotel then and is a hotel now. It’s a shame we can’t see the Garden of Allah. It was still around in 1956 and didn’t come down until August 1959.
