Melody Lane restaurant, 744 S. Hill St, downtown Los Angeles, 1943

Melody Lane restaurant, 744 S. Hill St, downtown Los Angeles, 1943Melody Lane was a mini-chain of restaurants around Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. They had a number of locations along Wilshire Blvd, as well as the Pig ‘N Whistle next to the Egyptian. And from 1940 to 1955 one of the prime locations in all of Southern California: the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine. But it wasn’t until I found this photo that I realized they also had a huge location in downtown L.A., at 744 S. Hill St. Get a load of those vaulted ceilings, and that counter must have 20 seats along it. At its peak, I bet this place was buzzing.

I love those booths in the photo below – they’re so high that they must have felt semi-private.

This ad features one of their most popular items: Little Thin Hot Cakes, which sound like crêpes to me.

I have the same problem as Paula. When I right click on the broken link “thingy” in the upper left corner, a drop down box appears. I I clicked on “open image in a new tab” and the ad appeared in the new tab. Just FYI. Amazing photos of Melody Lane! Is that Hedda Hopper sitting in one of the booths?! 😉

    • I’ve spend most of the last 24 hours trying to figure out why that photo doesn’t show up the way it should. I even re-uploaded it and updated the post…to no avail. I’m glad you figured out how to see it!

    I have a question….
Was there ever a Melody Lane in Seattle, Wa. I found a Souvenir Photograph , of my Parents, taken Oct. 13, 1944, by Publix Photographers, 710 Union Street, Seattle ,Washington. They are sitting at a dinner table, big bottle of wine, and Staircase in background. Thank you for your help.

    • My research is focused solely on Southern California, so I don’t about Seattle. But perhaps someone reading this might be able to answer your question, Dawn.

I am trying to find out if the Melody Lane Music machines were part of the restaurant chain? I have one. It’s not in perfect shape. I am trying to find a happy home for it. It’s been sitting under my desk for the last ten years. If anyone is interested please contact me. Just need the postage paid.
